ORIGINAL PROPOSAL

REVISED  PROPOSAL

Upon the completion of various analysis within the college of human sciences building for Michigan State University, this report presents a proposal that investigates the limitations of the current system. Although the current system meets all current codes based on the overall building performance as per ASHRAE codes. This proposal is aimed to improve the energy consumption of the system, In addition, the overall building meets current codes, but  LEED certification possibilities are also been investigated

The current heating load is meet by the production of hot water by three condensing boilers of 80 tons each. The chiller consist of two chiller that function in a lead lag operation. In other to provide supplementary heating to the overall system, a heat recovery chiller is used to replace the current chillers. The idea to recover some heat from the chiller to provide additional heating. Based on recovered heat more investigation would be made in other to use recovered heat for domestic hot water heating.

Another alternative been investigated is a CO2 based demand control ventilation with Dedicated outside air system with total energy recovery. This is incorporated to aid with ventilation. Currently the building is been over ventilated, which further causes a wastage of energy. Currently the control of the system equipment are scheduled to function 24/7 due to the multi usage of the building. This alternative is aimed at improving the indoor air quality of the space and thermal comfort of occupants within the space. This alternative is further driven to earn certain credits under the LEED certification guidance.

A combination of these approaches will eventually be evaluated and compared to the individual alternatively singly. Upon this analysis. The most economical would be chosen .

STRUCTURAL IMPACT

Investigating displacement ventilation might involve a combination with an underfloor air distribution. With underfloor systems there might be a need of slab integrated systems. Where piping would have to be combined with the structural element. There might be need to redesign he structural elements of the current slab by adding a topping slab. By adding the topping slab, the response time is reduced due to less thermal resistance of the slab mass. This impact is majorly aimed with enhancing the underfloor system.

PLUMBING IMPACT

With the implementation of the heat recovery chiller, the plumbing of the domestic water would have to be incorporated with the rejected heat. Where the domestic hot water piping would be incorporated with the chiller, also for the slab integrated system the plumbing of the mechanical system would have to be reconstructed in other to aid the condition system. New plumbing calculation would be made and re arrangement would be investigated. To adopt to the new systems.
